FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (updated 29 August 2007) |
| |
|
1) Why does deConneXion only serve
Miri and Mukah what about other places? |
|
Answer: deConneXion started in Miri
because of several factors. Politics not being one of them.
Contrary to popular belief, our Chairman is from Miri and
since he knows a lot of building owners in Miri, this is by
far the easiest and fastest way to roll out our services.
Why Mukah then?......Well, his parents came from Mukah and a
lot of his relatives are still there.
Other towns and cities in Sarawak will also be covered soon.
If your place is not covered and you would like it
serviced or want it faster please ask your local
building/apartment owner or management council to contact us
and we would be happy to install our equipment there to
provide service in your area if there is sufficient demand.

2) The signal is very low in my
area. How do I make it stronger? |
|
Answer: There are several ways to
boost the reception of the signal. You can try to move
closer to the window. You can use an external WiFi card or
better yet get a high powered (200mW) version. You can also
use a WIFI accesspoint in Client or Bridge mode to connect
to our Base Stations. Finally, you can install the unit
outdoors (on your roof or outside a window) with an external
high-gain antenna. All these steps will extend the range &
boost the transmit/receive power of the WiFi signal. |
| |
| |
|
3) The signal is very low in my
area. Can you put a repeater/booster in my area? |
|
Answer: Please try the steps in #2
above. This will help you to get the signal from our Base
Stations. However, if your area is blocked by several other
buildings or simply too far away from our nearest
transmitter, you can help us to provide better service to
your area by lobbying your building/apartment/condo/office
management or owner to allow us to put a Repeater or
Transmitter on top of the location. |
| |
| |
|
4) The Signal is very low in my
area. My notebook/PC can detect the DeConnexion Access Point
but the signal is very low. I cannot connect to it. Why? |
|
Answer:
Your notebook
can detect the low signal because we are using special
transmitters for large outdoor area WiFi coverage. Your
notebook can receive the signals but because the built-in
WiFi chipset does not have enough transmit power, it’s not
able to send the signal far enough to get back to our
transmitters. |

|
5) I tried everything but I still
can't get connected to your service. Can you come over to my
place and see what's wrong? |
|
Answer: While our Tech Support Team
will try their best to help solve your problem, there are
some limitations as to what we can do. If it is a hardware
related or software related issue beyond the normal
misconfiguration of WiFi settings we would not be able
to help beyond giving you ideas on what to check. Our
technical support staff are not permitted to provide
physical support, visit your office/house etc. deConneXion
staff are not authorized or will they ever try to ask to
enter your office/house or premises. Under no circumstances
should users assume that any one asking for such access into
your premises would be from deConneXion or its agents.
For these hardware and software related issues we ask that
you refer to your hardware vendor or to a local computer
store for hands-on configuration and help. |

registered users in Miri, Mukah and other places. The
service is FREE for the next 2 years. |

|
8)
I can't get the deConneXion signal in my
office/house/apartment..... Why not? |
|
Answer: The deConneXion service is
targeted to provide free basic internet connectivity to the
general public. The coverage areas are generally in and
around public areas. Please refer to the
list of our
HotZones to see if your
area is covered. If your area is covered but you still
cannot get a signal, you can try to move to another seating
location with better signal coverage. In general, you have a
better chance of getting the deConneXion signal is you are
next to the window than if you are in the middle of the
office or house. |

|
9) I want to get faster speeds than
what is currently available from your Free WiFi service. |
|

throughput but in most cases users can easily get 384kbps or
more. If you want to get a faster service with higher
data rates or dedicated bandwidth packages, please contact
our
sales people
for information on our subscription based internet packages. |

|
12) What do I need to connect to deConneXion's Free WiFi service? |
|
Answer: Users will need a WiFi
equipped notebook, desktop computer, PDA or smartphone to
connect. All deConneXion HotZones and Access Points have the
SSID: deConneXion_<#>. If you use your WiFi software to scan
the immediate area and you find one or several of these
SSIDs, just choose the one with the strongest signal. If you
don't find any SSIDs with deConneXion_<#> then it means that
particular area is not covered by our service. Please try to
move to another location and try again. |

|
20) Why does it seem like Mukah has
more or better coverage than Miri? |
|
Answer: There are many factors that
determine the signal propagation qualities of our
transmitters. Installation height, existence of many trees,
tall buildings or other obstacles, even interference
from other WiFi transmitters etc all affect how far the WiFi
signal can go and the area covered. For example, 1
transmitter would be able to cover a much more wider area in
a rural setting then it would in the middle of a city. Of
course, there's also the problem of getting permission to
install our equipment at suitable locations. Some building
owners just won't allow us to use their building while
others want to charge a very high monthly rental to do so.
All these things are taken into consideration. After all
it's a FREE service and we can't afford to pay ridiculously
high rental just for roof space. |

|
|
|
21) I can't log out when I'm
not going to use the connection anymore. How do I log out of
the network? Is there a way to log out?
|
|
Answer: YES!
Your browser probably has the “Pop-up
Blocker” turned on. You should disable it so that you can
see our “login window and timer”. If you don’t want to turn
off the pop-up blocker, just disconnect from the network or
turnoff your computer. After 15mins, your account will be
automatically logged off from the network. |

Sarawak. Please be patient. |
